Lunch with a Sociopath is a non-fiction novel which chronicles my struggle to recover after a cultic one-on-one relationship with an Episcopal priest who used thought reform techniques extensively. During the eight year period that I knew this priest, I lost my family, my children, my health, my faith, and very nearly my life.

Our lives were so entwined that it was almost impossible to distinguish if my thoughts were my own or were his. We were enmeshed, and it was as impossible to separate us as it is to separate a blend of salt and sugar. How do you tell the difference? How do you sort it out? You don't. You just do what the priest says even if it leaves a bitter taste on your tongue, even if you recoil from it.

Thought reform or mind control seems like something that only happens in a movie or a novel, but it is prevalent in our society today. One only has to look as far as the Catholic Church to find victims of spiritual abuse. While the stories of altar boys molested by priests have made headlines, countless victims are still suffering in silence. Whenever there is a power imbalance in a relationship, there is a danger that the person who holds more authority will abuse his or her power. It can occur on a large scale as with the Unification Church (the Moonies) or in smaller groups such as Heaven's Gate (39 members) or even in one-on-one relationships such as a priest and parishioner or a professor and a student. Victims of mind control are not crazy cult followers. They are people like me and you who have fallen into a trap set by a predatory leader. In my experience, the trap was built with trust and words and compassion which lured me into thinking that I was safe until it snapped down on me. http://lunchwithasociopath.blogspot.co.uk/

Episode 14 | Egypt: Sex, Mobs and Revolution (Unreported World, Channel 4 ITV)
The reasons behind sexual harassment and assault in Egypt are complex but society's attitude to women is at the heart of it. In the south of Cairo, the team talks to men who claim that they have been paid to attack women activists, although they say they don't know who is paying them. The current government says that it is not behind the violence perpetrated by the mobs on women and has set up an inquiry.

We can all be vulnerable in our own ways:
Why would anyone want to make things any worse?

Be careful what you take on board by way of ideas or therapy
And who you get involved with

Only YOU can decide

Edward Lear

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die, to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to: 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep;
To sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there's the rub:
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause – there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment,
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

William Shakespeare, Hamlet
